For generations, Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center has been an important part of health care in the Brainerd Lakes Area. Its roots stretch all the way back to 1890, when Dr. James Leaworthy Camp opened a small 12-bed hospital in Brainerd. More than 135 years later, St. Joseph’s continues that tradition of caring for people throughout our region.

Health Care Close to Home

Today, Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center is a 162-bed hospital and Level III Trauma Center offering a wide range of medical services right here in Brainerd.

For adults 45+, having access to quality health care close to home becomes increasingly important. Essentia Health provides services that support people through many different stages of life, from preventive care and rehabilitation to treatment for serious or chronic health conditions.

Services particularly relevant to healthy aging include heart and vascular care, cancer care, diabetes education, orthopedics, physical and occupational therapy, medication management, imaging, wound care, lung cancer screening, supportive and palliative care, and more.

St. Joseph’s also provides 24-hour emergency care and is designated as a Primary Stroke Center, providing critical resources when every minute matters.

Healthy aging involves more than treating an illness or injury. Emotional, mental, social, and spiritual well-being are also important parts of living well.

Essentia Health provides resources that address these needs through services such as mental health care, psychiatry, grief support, supportive and palliative care, substance-use treatment, and spiritual care.

The Center's Ageless Expo brings health care providers, businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, and other local resources together under one roof to help adults 45+ learn, ask questions, make connections, and discover resources that can help them live healthier, safer, and more connected lives.
