A Free Class at The Center: From Too Much to Just Right- Downsizing for Older Adults
Do you ever look around your home and wonder, “Where did all this stuff come from?”
If so, you’re definitely not alone!
After years—or even decades—in the same home, our belongings have a way of multiplying. Closets fill up, basements become storage areas, paperwork piles grow, and boxes we planned to deal with “someday” are still waiting for us.
Whether you’re considering a move, trying to clear out a few closets, or simply ready to create a little more breathing room, knowing where to begin can be the hardest part.

Join us at The Center on October 16 from 12:00–1:00 p.m. for From Too Much to Just Right: Downsizing for Older Adults, an engaging and informative panel discussion featuring local experts who know a thing or two about tackling TMS—Too Much Stuff!
Our panelists will share practical tips, proven strategies, and helpful community resources for decluttering, organizing, donating, recycling, selling, and “right-sizing” your space.
Meet Your Panel of Experts
Kathy McLaughlin, Professional Organizer: Where do you even begin? Kathy will share practical organizing strategies, tips for tackling paper clutter, and ways to break a big project into smaller, more manageable steps.
Amy Price, LPT Realty: Amy will discuss downsizing from a realtor’s perspective, including what homeowners should consider when preparing their home for a future move or sale.
Eli from Call2Haul: Sometimes a project is simply too big to handle alone. Eli will talk about cleanouts, haul-aways, moving assistance, and knowing when it might be time to call in some extra help.
Becky Flansburg, Online Reseller: Is Grandma’s china valuable? What about those boxes of collectibles tucked away in the basement? Becky will share tips for determining when collectibles may have resale value—and when they might simply be “stuff.”
What Do You Do with All That Stuff?
One of the biggest challenges of downsizing isn’t deciding that something needs to go—it’s figuring out where it should go next.
A simple approach is:
SORT → SELL → DONATE → GIVE AWAY → RECYCLE → DISPOSE
Not everything needs to be sold, and certainly not everything needs to be thrown away. Our panel will help you understand your options and connect you with resources that can make those decisions easier. Through handouts and discussions, our goal is to have participants leave this session with options, ideas, resources, and a good idea of where to begin in their decluttering journey.
Downsizing Is About More Than Moving
A home you’ve lived in for decades holds much more than belongings. It holds memories, milestones, family history, and pieces of your life. That can make letting go difficult.
But downsizing doesn’t have to mean giving everything up. It can mean creating a home that better fits the life you want today.
Reducing clutter can mean less cleaning and maintenance, lower household expenses, improved accessibility and safety, less stress, greater freedom and flexibility, and peace of mind knowing that you’ve made decisions about your belongings yourself.
Most importantly, downsizing is about simplifying—not shrinking your life.
Whether you're planning a move, helping a loved one downsize, or simply ready for a fresh start, this event will give you the tools, resources, clarity, and encouragement you need to begin.

From Too Much to Just Right: Downsizing for Older Adults will be held October 16 from 12:00–1:00 p.m. at The Center, 803 Kingwood Street in Brainerd.
The session is FREE and open to the public.
Snacks will be provided, and attendees are welcome to bring a sack lunch.
You don’t have to tackle the entire basement or empty every closet in one weekend. Start with one drawer, one box, one shelf, or one decision.
Little by little, “Too Much” can become “Just Right.”
